Tata Power aims 25% renewable energy share

Anil Sardana, Managing Director of Tata Power informed that the firm aims to have 20-25 percent of its total generation capacity from renewable sources.

Sardana said this after commissioning a 21 mw wind project in Rajasthan. Of its total installed power capacity of 8,521 mw (including this wind project), 873 mw is from renewable sources such as hydro, wind and solar. The firm has thermal power generation capacity of 7,648 mw.

The firm has an operating wind power capacity of 397 mw spread across five states – Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Karnataka. The firm signed an agreement of installing 30 mw in Rajasthan, reports suggest.

It aims to add 150-200 mw annually. Through this project, the company made a foray into Rajasthan. Sardana expressed gratitude to all the government officials who facilitated this project and said he looks forward to their continued support.

Tata Power has three of its renewable energy projects registered under the Clean Development Mechanism programme of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. These projects include 50.4 mw wind power project at Samana, 50.4 mw wind project at Khandke, Maharashtra, and 25 mw solar project at Mithapur, Gujarat.

Besides wind energy capacity, the firm has 28 mw of operating solar power generation capacity. Its subsidiary Tata Power Delhi Distribution has also commissioned a 1 mw grid-connected rooftop solar plant in Delhi.
